As much of the history as I know so far...
Hartwell Winfield was born 1813 in Sussex county Virginia.
The census of 1850 Shows he has a son, but it doesn't list a wife for Hartwell nor mother for his son Jacob.
update 26 January 2012:
found in Virginia State Vital records microfilm, Hartwell had another son Willis. Willis Married a woman named Louisa (last name was barely legible, I think 'Marks').
Willis & Jacob's mother we found was a slave named Mary. The fact that she was still indentured when she died is why we never see her listed in official records after 1858. She died young, in 1858, she was listed as being 40 years old.
Although she was a slave and Hartwell was apparently free, they had three children together according to Vital Records. the youngest was a girl who only lived 6 months.
Jacob Winfield was born 1835 in Sussex County Virginia.

*An interesting note about Jacob Winfield:
we found military records that shows someone named Jacob Winfield fought in over 2 dozen civil war battles and came out smelling like a rose. But since only the name was listed and not his race or any information we cannot be sure it's the right Jacob until we have done further research.
*Added 29 November 2011:
Today I found U.S. Veteran's Department documentation showing Jacob Winfield fought in the United States Army Colored Troops in the civil war. They are noted as having fought valiantly at the siege of Petersburg, 1864-1865. U.S. Colored Troops Army of the James and Army of The Potomac.
I was also very excited to find the final resting place of my Great Great Grand Father Jacob. He is at City Point National Cemetery in Hopewell Virginia. His head stone is pictured here.

Jacob married Sarah (born about 1850) and they had 11 Children. (I'm guessing they didn't read much :)
Their children are listed by the 1880 census as:
Ellic, William, Virginia (Jinny), Fannie, Henry, Robert , Lucy, Roger, Archer, Herbert & Thomas.
I am sure I will find more on Jacob and Sarah's off spring later, but as of now all I have is their names and approximated ages.
(as of December 2011 we have found all the marriage records for all Jacob & Sarah's offspring! Names to be added later...)
William however is my Great Grandfather so I was particularly interested in him.

William Winfield was born 1876 in Sussex County Virginia. He married Lula Claiborne (Born 1880) in January of 1900 and the proceeded to have twelve...yes I said twelve children! They definitely didn't read and were obviously in love... Whole LOT of love! Wonderful :)
Their children are listed in the 1920 census as Wyatt, George, Robert, Thomas, William, Peter, James, Frank, Archie, Mary, Annie & Lucy Mae.
Of this sibling group, Frank Winfield born 1912 in Sussex County Virginia is my Grand Father. He Married my Grand Mother Alberta Parker in 1931.

I have been able to discover some of Lula & William's off spring all over Brooklyn thanks to the power of facebook.
Their son William (I am told by one of his grand daughters he went by Wally) married Christine Cook in Surry County Virginia . We actually have a record of their marriage license, acquired from the Surry County Court House archives. William (Wally) & Christine's children are Lewis (Hamm), Willie, Jimmie(Junie), Clyde, Goldie & Rita.
This information was supplied by my cousin who is Wally's grand daughter and the daughter of Jimmie(Junie).
More to come ...
